Lebanon is believed to be the birthplace of Mediterranean life, culture and cuisine. According to some accounts, Tyre (located in present-day Lebanon) is the oldest city in the world. It was founded in the year 5800 B.C. Byblos, another city built around the same period, was a significant Phoenician religious and trading centre with close links to the Egyptian Pharaohs. It is birthplace of the modern Roman alphabet and its name was at the root of the word used to describe the first Holy Book, the Bible. Nobody can remain indifferent to Lebanon. Its history, location and role in the Mediterranean make it the caretaker of the region's origins and secrets. Lebanon was in ancient times the trading centre of the Phoenician coast, and the heart of trade and culture of the eastern Mediterranean. The Pharaohs bought Cedar trees and copper there to build their ships. Wine, livestock, the wares of the local farmers and artisans, all were traded at Lebanon, and taken to other civilizations and cultures along the Mediterranean coastline. All the cultures of the Mediterranean drew from Lebanon's culture and contributed to it because of its role in the Mediterranean way of life. So we welcome you to Le Cedre, the place to discover Lebanese cuisine and experience the vast cornucopia of rich and subtle flavours provided by the civilisations that make their home along the coastline of the Mediterranean sea. * * * Enjoy your journey and sahtein! * * * |
